Reflecting on Gandhiji’s vision, the newspaper continued to be published on a weekly basis until 1962. The idea of a cooperative effort did not work well. Families who were living on the settlement drifted away and sought greener pastures. The political activities continued and during his life time Manilal Gandhi participated actively in defiance campaigns, and Phoenix remained an inspiration for political leaders. The weekly newspaper took on the central position in the life of the Phoenix Settlement during the years after Gandhiji’s departure.
